The name “Marche” derives from the Germanic “mark” which means “border”. The region is so called because it marked one of the borders of the Holy Roman Empire. In particular, Charlemagne and subsequent emperors entrusted various fiefdoms (marquisates) to the nobles (the marquises). The southern territory of the Marche is characterized by a great variety of landscapes and natural environments. It extends from the Sibillini mountains, at whose foot the medieval city of Ascoli Piceno, to the inland hills rich in history, art and culture like the towns of Ripatransone and Offida, up to the Adriatic coast where the fortified villages of Torre di Palme, Grottammare and Marano, offering a unique combination of natural beauty, historical-artistic heritage and traditional culture that is still alive and genuine. Also worth visiting are the cities of Fermo, Amandola, Montefalcone Appennino and other wonderful villages.
